The Mao-Obama T shirts are not illegal in China as they are for sale everywhere in Beijing and elsewhere. The claim that they are illegal must be for the consumption of foreign (to China) press.

I was a Reaganite in the 80's, inspired by Barry Goldwater and those like him. If Reagan were still alive, I'd still be a Reaganite. If Barry Goldwater were still alive, I'd still be a Reaganite.

If the Republican Party were still the party of Ronald Reagan and Barry Goldwater, I'd still be a Republican.

But it isn't.

The Republican party is now the party of petty bigotry and hatred. It is no longer the "Law and Order" party, it's the party of passing laws to order others around. It's no longer the party of "Equality under the Law", it's the party of passing laws to enshrine inequality in the Law.

Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves and made millions of human beings who weren't even legally people citizens of this Republic. Eisenhower, the greatest military leader to ever sit in the White House, sent the National Guard to enforce the laws Lincoln helped make a reality. Against the protests of Lyndon Johnson and the KKK dominated Southern Democratic party, Eisenhower pushed for Civil Rights. Nixon created the EPA, signed legislation giving more protections to women and other minorities. Goldwater, when asked about gays in the military responded that people don't have to be straight, they just have to shoot straight. Finally, Reagan ended the Cold War, not by invading anyone, but by using American ingenuity to make it too expensive for the Soviets.

That was then.

Since Reagan, the Republican party has supported punitive legislation against gays, lesbians, immigrants, non-Christians, racial minorities, the destruction of the environment, trillions of dollars of pork for big businesses and the list goes on and it isn't pretty. We've been in a near state of constant war under two different Bush administrations, and Obama -- who is trying to end the current wars the same as Nixon ended Vietnam -- is doing everything he can.

And you tell me, in what way is the GOP any better than the DNC? Or better question: How is the GOP of the 21st century any different from the racist, bigoted, white supremacist Southern Democratic party of the early 20th century, because I'm not seeing the difference.

Great article. I was just a child in the 70's and I am curious to know how a generation of Americans could be so loving to dictators who murdered millions of people.

Great collection of Obama shirts and merchandise. Funny, funny. I bet there's a lot of Obama merchandise getting marked down and dusty on shelves now that the warm afterglow is over and reality has set in. Never seen anything like Obama-mania before. Hopefully the celebrity worship will stay in the entertainment world from now on and out of politics.
