I was moved to tears by what I saw in Denver that day. Your brother was killed by pop culture as much as the drugs that are promoted in the music he loved. Now we have another lefty in Hollywood (Sheen) championing drug use and crack in particular.

Expect a wave of Sheen wannabes and a lot more ruined lives to follow.

I could rant and rave forever as to how the system has failed to help my brother who is Daniel Epstein passed away March 25, 2009 from a drug overdose after fighting for years to recover unsuccessfully. i remember the day i went to drug court with Dan and was shocked as we walked in he knew the judge who stopped to chat with Dan, he knew him from Dan’s many visits to his court room for drug related charges. I briefly spoke with the judge and begged him not to give Dan another slap on the wrist this time if the system couldn’t back up the hard facts of how serious drug use that it is no joke i knew that Dan wouldn’t make it.

I sat in court to hear the judge give Dan one more last chance gave him 1 week outpatient rehab and washed that was that. I was stunned i know people who’ve gotten more for parking tickets and this is what we are teaching people about the severity of drug use and addiction? If this is the message broadcasted how are children not to fall victims alcohol and drug use/addiction? I have a son in public school and will do anything to try to put a stop to this epidemic but the schools are no help. i asked his school last year what they were doing for red ribbon week to educate the kids about drugs and i was told they were going to tiptoe around teaching about drugs by just teaching the kids how to eat healthy. I was so upset i begged that that was the wrong message to give our children and explained the only help we can give our children in hopes of moving forward in the fight against drug use and abuse is to teach our children as early as possible. I was still turned down and they stuck with their plan.

Now it’s coming on 2 years after Dan’s death and I have to believe Dan didn’t die for nothing that his death was for a reason a cause and that we must not give up on trying to keep pushing parents, teachers, politicians who ever will spread the message not to turn their heads away saying it won’t happen to my child. Dan is proof it can happen to any of us any of our children addiction doesn’t discriminate we were raised upper middle class attended private schools played sports had our parents support and still addiction found its way into my home. Please keep pushing our schools, politicians and community to educate our children that drugs are no joke and the earlier we teach our children this the better chance they have to make the right choices not to continue the ever growing trend of drug use/abuse.

I’m in Mill Valley, Marin, where the Safeway parking lot is not safe. My 16 year old is in recovery and hardly had to pay for alcohol,weed, mdma,vicodin, adderall or the straws for snorting. These drugs are part of the culture that starts about 11 on lsd. This is a “picture perfect”place to live, but a place of danger for vulnerable teens. And what teen isn’t vulnerable? I thought I was vigilant as a parent, the issue is much bigger than me, a single mom.
battle that has been lost and many of the parents parent their teen by sending them away to school/treatment where life if more simple. Much gratitude for your work and, BTW, are there any parent groups here that are active in this regard?
